The seedlings of LYTO were sown by its founder late Ch. Shiv Dayal in late 1800s in a small non - descript village of Bohan in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab (India).
India in those days was an impoverished colony of the British with no local industry except for village handlooms. Ch. Shiv Dayal started a small venture of handlooms in the village which generated not only income but employment to fellow villagers. In early 1900s he and his son Ch. Uttam Chand diversified into trading of cement and iron which came all the way from England.
After World War I, the founders started manufacturing of garden tools etc from iron parts procured from ship breaking industry in Karachi (now in Pakistan). From its base at Hoshiarpur, they set up their branch at Nankana Sahib (now in Pakistan) which they were forced to close at time of partition of India in 1947.
With the advent of domestic Industry, the group forayed into trading and established themselves as stockiest of TISCO, TOMCO, Imperial Chemical Industries, British American Tobacco, Lipton, Lever Brothers to name a few.
